Optimistic Andy Murray seems closer than ever to landing his long-awaited maiden major after nearly pulling off a wonderful Australian Open semi-final triumph over Novak Djokovic.

Murray recalled the desperate tense deciding set 5-2 before succumbing 6-3 3-6 6-7 (4-7) 6-1 7-5 in four hours, 50 minutes thriller at Melbourne Park.

Runner-up in 2010 and 2011, Murray went to Australia with your tail between his legs after a straight sets to Djokovic destroys the previous year.

But inspired by the new coach of Ivan Lendl, three times a Grand Slam finalist in 2012, vowing to break his duck, and even to push the world No.1 ranking.

“Today is a match was important for several reasons. Obviously, I wanted to win above all,” Murray said the early hours of Saturday morning.

“But in a sort of last year, the year that Novak has been, I think, a very fine line between being No.1 in the world, and there are three or four.

“I think that gap, I feel now closed.

“My job in the next two or three months, to overtake him and the guys in front of me. So (it) takes a lot of work and hopefully get it done.”

Almost along the Murray, after Three break points in the penultimate game, a marathon meeting was the first loss for the 11 matches since Lendl capture earlier this month.

24-year-old said she enjoys having a big winner eight times in his corner.

“I feel like that when you look up someone standing on it will help,” Murray said.

“Obviously for me, I want to try and pay the kind of faith that he has shown me to come work with me. So I would have liked to have done probably better here.

“But hopefully he was happy with the way I did and how I acted as a court.

“Hopefully, the French Open, I’m doing a little better.”

Like Murray, Lendl lost the first three Grand Slam finals in the Czech-born American and the sage advice for her young has proved to be money.

Asked what the last thing Lendl said before his epic semi-final, Murray said: “He told me it was going to be painful.

“And he said:” You win, but you’re going to go through a lot of pain to get there, so get ready to “.”

Both fighters, good friends, and was born a week, really struggled bravely through the pain barrier in trying to book a berth in Sunday night’s final with Rafael Nadal.

If Murray had one regret, it was a routine backhand clearing one of his three break points in the fifth set 5-5 Djokovic serve.

“It was tough at the end, probably because you come back, you’ll be close to breaking. To lose, yeah, it’s hard,” said the Scot.
