MUMBAI: Rupee touched a two and a half month high on Friday, aided by the local company’s shares, as demand for riskier assets, spurred by hopes Greece will soon reach agreement on restructuring its debt.

At 10.15 am, rupee was 49.72/73 against the dollar after touching 49.65, the highest since 9 November and stronger than 50.09/10 close on Wednesday. The market was closed on Thursday a local holiday.

“I expect the euro bullishness in stocks will continue for some time, and the rupee at 49.00/05 can be tested,” said Hari Chandramgathan, Forex Dealer Federal Bank in Mumbai.

The euro held hefty gains against the dollar last Friday, after hitting a five-week high, as the Fed’s pledge to keep rates near zero for the next three years to support the agencies funded by dollars.

BSE Sensex rose 1 percent at the start of trading, extending gains for the sixth consecutive year, rising at a foreign investment fund.

Minister of Foreign institutional investors have bought Indian shares worth $ 1560000000 so far in January, and invested $ 3390000000 in debt.

Traders said the development would provide directional cues, and Greece influence the dollar inflows into India.
